Pro Favourites Questioned – #mwc17

With only a couple of weeks left to go before the biggest competition in the mountainboard calendar, I posed the same 5 questions to some of the favourites in the BoarderX and Freestyle. Before we begin, I want to warn you that there is some sarcasm and joking involved below so don’t take it all seriously! Oh and this is by no means a conclusive list of the contenders. With that in mind, here’s what they had to say:

Nicky Geerse

Happy to see so many of my friends together again

How does it feel to be one of the favourites to take home a World title?

flattering to have people believe in me

Chicken with salmonella as riders dinner (I don’t eat meat)

Have you done much preparation for the event?

I bought ellbow pads and knee pads

Who are your riders to watch in BoarderX and Freestyle?

I wanna say kody for BX and Zak for FS. Looking forward to see what he will throw

Plenty of practice and focus, and determination to push

Have you done much preparation for the event?

Some practice on pump tracks but mainly at hbbp boardercross track

Who are your riders to watch in BoarderX and Freestyle?

For freestyle, matt brind, Nicky g, arno and Ben. Racing, kody, Andy brind

Kody Stewart

What are your thoughts ahead of #mwc17?

Looking forward to spending time with all the athletes and watching the progression of the sport with freestyle coming back

How does it feel to be one of the favourites to take home a World title?

Honored to even be considered one of the favorites. As always I just want to go out and ride with other mtnboarders because I dont have that opportunity here in the states

What will it take to win one of the titles?

Dedication. With the course being flatter and the addition of a 3 jump freestyle course it will take a really well rounded rider to take a title home this year

Have you done much preparation for the event?

With the rush to have Colab decks available before the world champs preparation has been scarce. I’ve been pumping bowls in skateparks in order to get the feeling back and trying to strap in whenever I can

Who are your riders to watch in BoarderX and Freestyle?

Nicky G with his pumping strength will definitely be a wild card in the racing. As well as his consistency in freestyle. But obviously Matt has a determination that’s unmatched. It will be a good show with a track that is going to level the playing field and a freestyle course that will award consistency

Andy ‘Mini Brind’ Brind

What are your thoughts ahead of #mwc17?

Cannot wait! Always great to see everyone, and even better now that the MWFC is back, going to be a hell of an event!

How does it feel to be one of the favourites to take home a World title?

Great! Gives me confidence knowing people think I can win and see me a competition

What will it take to win one of the titles?

I feel you need to be in your early 20’s, 22 for example. British. From Essex and the tallest of all your siblings. Well that’s for BX anyway, FS, eh anyone can win, just needs some big old…. Well not sure what the rating is on this blog so you put your own word at the end.

Have you done much preparation for the event?

The last few weeks, none. However the weeks prior to that, and starting again as of 3weeks to go! Been hitting a teeny weeny pump track on my way home from work, with small very tight berms, which have helped me with my biggest weakness, as the 3rd it into a great strength. That as well as hitting a single track MTB spot in the woods to get my endurance up

Who are your riders to watch in BoarderX and Freestyle?

Matt ofc, Guinness world record holder, current champion in both disciplines. Other than him, I hear Kody wants the BX title again rather a lot. For freestyle, I think Antoine has a real chance, from seeing him in the UK last year he was a definite stand out.

Antoine Gambier

What are your thoughts ahead of #mwc17?

Im really worried about my ankle. I broke it on end of April 2017. It was a bad new for me because I was really exited with this comp. endeed it is my first world comp but im off since 2months and actually my ankle is still weak. I haven’t started my preparation yet. It’s kind of compromised at only 3weeks of this amazing comp…

How does it feel to be one of the favourites to take home a World title?

I was surprising when I saw my world title favorite nomination from matt’s blog, it makes you feel some pression, you want to make great and that’s super cool to be considered as a good rider

What will it take to win one of the titles?

So many preparation and I don’t have it haha
Stay focused and enjoy the ride as usual

Have you done much preparation for the event?

I haven’t done any preparation. Today, I can’t ride with my weaknesses ankle

Who are your riders to watch in BoarderX and Freestyle?

I haven’t too much ideas for the boardercross. For the freestyle part, I watch nicky G, matt brind, Masson more, James wanklyn and mark Adams
But, be aware with Yvan Courtot who’s my French mate, good friend and great mountainboarder, Im pretty sure that he’ll be on top 10 for the freestyle !

Mason Moore

What will it take to win one of the titles?

Balls, consistency, and being consistently ballsy.

I’ve tried to hike and ride in the heat to build stamina, otherwise the standard mountainboard shenanigans.

Who are your riders to watch in BoarderX and Freestyle?

I wanna say look out for Matt, Arno, and Kody in no particular category or order… the reality is that there are too many bangers to nail only a few down. Good luck to everybody!

What are your thoughts ahead of #mwc17?

I can’t wait! It’s going to be an epic event and, as always, a great gathering of the riders. The track and jumps this year mean it’ll be an even closer competition than ever and I can’t wait to see how it pans out.

How does it feel to be one of the favourites to take home a World title?

It’s great. To be in the mix is always awesome and to be a favourite is a good feeling. I just want to get out there and get racing/freestyling!

What will it take to win one of the titles?

100% and a flawless performance. There are so many riders who are good enough to win that any mistakes or lack of effort will swiftly push you down the rankings!

Have you done much preparation for the event?

Less than I would have liked, but more than the last couple of years. There’s still a couple of weeks left for some last ditch rush prep!

Who are your riders to watch in BoarderX and Freestyle?

For me it’s Andy Brind in BoarderX. He’s lacked confidence in the past but still made the semi’s at both of his World BoarderX appearances. This track will be a lot more comfortable for Andy and plays to his strengths – I think he’ll come out with a stormer.

In the Freestyle, I feel the ball is in Nicky G’s court. He’s guaranteed to throw some crazy shapes but it’s almost up to him as to who will win the thing. If he is consistent in the high pressure moments and brings out his best performance, he could be unbeatable.

What are your thoughts ahead of #mwc17?

Can’t friggin wait mate! Last years #mwc16 event in Serbia was the highlight of my year. A week to be with a community of good people from all over the world, its going to be fun.

How does it feel to be one of the favourites to take home a World title?

I’ll turn up, please the crowds, and go home with gold, meanwhile everyone makes a load of money. Some will come to see me lose, some will come to see me win, but they will all pay to see me ride.

What will it take to win one of the titles?

In the boarder cross, and for this for this type of track the best tactic will be to not look back and charge the whole course. Doing this with 3 other equally fast riders will be a challenge for anyone and will take a high level of spacial awareness and quick reaction times. This only gets properly trained on race day. So racing experience will be a big factor for whoever wins. That being said, anything could happen.

The freestyle is a completely different ball game. It will take some double backflips,720s and 900s all performed on three successive jumps in three runs. This is almost completely an individual game that relies on your own trick ability, ability to ride out three runs with three different tricks, and the ability to do this under the pressure of other riders pushing themselves. Whoever wins this is going to be whoever put the most time into dialling their tricks, and repeating them. I’ve got no chance.

Have you done much preparation for the event?

I’ve not had access to anything in the lines of a boardercross or pump track, so my training has been fairly limited in that respect. However I’ve kept nimble by doing a lot of bowl and street skating.

This years track has a 20 roller straight, I’ve given it a lot of thought. I’m sure the years of riding my old pumptrack at my home in Cornwall will have given me some muscle memory that will help me perfect my technique and pumping rhythm that after two days of practice I will be able to charge the whole course.

But to supplement what I hope will be good pumping technique and pumping rhythm I have been putting the hours in in the gym over the last 6 months. Heavy high bar squats, pistol squats and deadlifts, box jumps. More recently I’ve incorporated 100m hill sprints on a 1:5 gradient, 3 times, 3 times a week at a hill near my house in central Brighton. I’m hoping in doing these three things I have built a high level of power and have will limit fatigue both walking back up the hill and recovering from each race.
I’ve also been working towards my increasing my start gate pulling power and to be honest with you I’m basically ripped now, so I’m worried I may pull the gateposts out of the roll in. Over the coming 3 weeks I will focus on light training and increasing fitness and work capacity. I’m also focusing on improving mobility, which is especially important for getting super low on the heel side turns.

Who are your riders to watch in BoarderX and Freestyle?

Matt ‘notorious’ Brind is obviously the one to watch for both disciplines, but for boardercross he better watch out. Last years event was just a warm up for me after coming out of retirement. Once I beat a guy mentally and physically he is never the same again.

Other riders: Beiran Stiltzer-Martlew. He’s a skilful and sneaky racer that manages to fit through gaps on corners you wouldn’t think were possible as his background is in riding gnarly free rides. Last year we got into situation during the knockout round to the semi final, half way down the 1km track in Serbia he decides to undertake twice on two different corners, forcing me to make up more speed on the connecting features, which was nothing short of terrifying, his racing style forces you to take risks that you would not normally take as he takes the most ridiculous lines. https://www.facebook.com/mark.sewell.313/videos/t.656770753/10150767917135322/?type=2&theater This is a video of Pete Tatham racing with a similar style (ON A QUALIFYING ROUND) and is a particular style that I will be wary of.

I could go into similar details about other dangerous riders I raced last year, e.g. Kody Stewart, Tosa Jovic and Zak Lingane, and riders I’ve raced with for years in the UK champs like the Andy Brind, Tom Reece and James Wanklyn. There’s a lot of riders that are coming to this competition who I haven’t raced before (particularly the guys from France and the US), so I’m unsure what to expect.

I’m less familiar with the freestyle discipline. But I’ll name a few. Matt ‘notorious’ Brind, Mason Moore, Nicky G, Arno VDV, Kody Stewart, Gary Crowhurst and Jeremy Leafe. I expect to see a show, and all of these riders pushing themselves to the limit.

What are your thoughts ahead of #mwc17?

Im so happy that the Freestyle came back to the World Championship and I want to see what riders from all the world can do now on the jumps

How does it feel to be one of the favourites to take home a World title?

That is a bit weird, but cool that the people still think I have a chance to get a title

What will it take to win one of the titles?

In my opinion the most important will be good physical preparation for the BX and experience with consistency in Freestyle, not necessarily spectacular tricks, but the effectiveness.

Have you done much preparation for the event?

I spend a lot of time this year on a mountainboard, but I cant call it any special preparation before #mwc17

Who are your riders to watch in BoarderX and Freestyle?

I go with My team so I believe that the Polish riders will be in high places! At BoarderX I dont have any favorites because the track is very different from that in Serbia so it will be something new for everyone. In Freestyle I hope for good battle between Matt and Nicky
